Summer is here again and it is time to enjoy all this season has to offer. As the days start to get longer and the temperature starts to rise, many fresh fruits and vegetables are beginning to sprout and grow. Weekend BBQ's and trips to the beach are a great time to enjoy some of Mother Nature's yummiest fresh fruits and vegetables.


Fruits in season May - August : Apricots, Cherries, Pineapples, Blueberries, Cantaloupe, Kiwi, Peaches, Plums, Raspberries, Strawberries, and Watermelons.


Enjoy fruits on low fat yogurt and top it with granola for a healthy breakfast or snack. Cut up fresh Fruit and blend with a cup of low fat milk to make refreshing smoothies on a hot summer day. Keep fresh fruits around the house for a healthy snack option for the family.


Vegetables is season May - August: Artichokes, Asparagus, Broccoli, Corn, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Green Beans, Lettuce, Okra, Rhubarb, Spring Peas, Summer Squash, Tomatoes, and Zucchini.


Benefit from a variety of fresh vegetables on a bed of fresh greens to make a nutritious salad bursting with different flavors. There are endless salad combinations so fave fun trying different vegetables with each salad.


Top salad with lean meat such as grilled chicken for a satisfying summer lunch.


Planning to grill?


Veggies are great there too! Season with salt and pepper, lightly drizzle with olive oil, wrap in tin foil and place on the grill out of direct fire and cook until tender.


Fresh Fruits and Vegetables are full of disease fighting Vitamins and Antioxidants. A diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables is thought to prevent certain chronic diseases and cancers. All fruits and vegetables are not created equal and have their own unique make up of valuable Vitamins and Antioxidants, therefore buy a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables so you can enjoy all they have to offer. Whenever possible make a family outing to the local farmer's market. Fruits and Vegetalbes that are in season alway cost less and this helps to support your local farmers.


Picnics, weekends at the beach, and cookouts are great summer outings, but before you pack up, make sure you know the basics of food safety. When you get ready fro outdoor events, remember the following:


  • Wash hands before, during and after handling food. Bring sanitizing gel or towelettes.
  • Keep cold foods below 40 degrees Fahrenheit and hot foods about 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Store cooked foods separate from raw foods.
  • Don't let perishables such as meat, fish, poultry and dairy foods sit out for more than one hour.
  • Transport foods to the grill on one plate and off the grill on another plate.
  • Store leftovers in tightly sealed containers.
